The Scientific Library of the Poznan Archaeological Museum came into being as an independent unit in 1924, together with the opening of the Prehistory Department of the Wielkopolskie Muzeum. However, since the beginning of the Museum's existence, ie since 1857, books had been collected for the use of the staff members.

The Library collects books and journals from the field of archaeology and related disciplines: history (Poland's and general), history of culture, history of art, numismatics, anthropology, ethnography, museology, monument preservation and conservation, and exhibition catalogues.
At the end of 2006 the collection contained 53 198 items, with 28 166 compact publications and 25 032 journals.

The Library carries out an exchange of publications with various institutions in Poland (71 exchange partners) and abroad (252 exchange partners).
